Gaspar and Wang Celebrated for Accomplishments in ACS Energy Letters Article

Scientists, who received honors in 2021, are leaders in their fields for bioenergy and energy storage

The research accomplishments of two scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) were recognized in an article published in the December 6, 2022, issue of the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Energy Letters.

The article, “Highlights of the 2021-2022 Award-Winning Research Accomplishments in the ACS Energy and Fuels Division,” featured scientists from across the nation who received divisional and national awards at the ACS Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 national meetings.

The featured scientists are members of the ACS Energy and Fuels Division, which promotes and advances energy-related research, development, and education to address the world’s energy and chemical challenges.

Among the nine scientists featured were PNNL bioenergy expert Daniel Gaspar and Wei Wang, a material scientist for energy storage technology research.

Gaspar was noted for receiving the Richard A. Glenn Award for Best Paper presented at the 2021 Spring ACS National Meeting for his innovative presentation, “Screening and Identification of Diesel Bio-blend Stocks to Improve Performance and Reduce Emissions.”

He led the Department of Energy’s Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines project, coordinating the efforts of nine national laboratories to identify more sustainable fuel alternatives for vehicles that would promote higher efficiency standards and lower emissions levels.

Through this research, Gaspar and his colleagues have contributed to understanding the structure–property relationships focused on fuel component behavior and performance associated with both octane and biofuels.

Wang is the director of PNNL’s Energy Storage Materials Initiative, and he is also the laboratory fellow and technical lead for stationary energy storage research and development at PNNL.

An internationally recognized leader in grid-scale energy storage materials and technologies, he received the 2021 Emerging Researcher Award for his research contributions to developing redox flow battery technologies and for pioneering chemical studies of electrolyte solvation.

Wang’s cross-cutting research encompasses basic materials discovery and mechanistic studies in addition to technology development and deployment. His discoveries for redox flow battery electrolytes have been featured in prestigious high-impact journals such as Science and Nature Energy.

The ACS Energy Letters article was written by a group of the 2022 officers of the ACS Energy and Fuels Division, including PNNL’s Yuyan Shao and David Heldebrant.
