Earth scientist Jiwen Fan appointed to a four-year term as an editor of the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Fan will focus on original research articles that advance the development and application of atmosphere-related aspects of Earth system models

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Earth scientist Jiwen Fan has been appointed an editor of an American Geophysical Union (AGU) journal, the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (JAMES), for a four-year term from Jan. 2020 to Dec. 2023.
A Gold Open Access journal, JAMES focuses on publishing original research articles that advance the development and application of Earth system models. This includes models across all scales, with particular emphasis on understanding the coupling of the Earth system to biological, geological, or chemical systems.
“I am honored and happy to support JAMES as the editor handling atmosphere papers. JAMES has become the preeminent journal for scientific Earth system modeling papers and I look forward to helping publish high-quality research,” said Fan.
Fan’s research explores a wide range of atmospheric-related topics, including atmospheric chemistry and aerosols, convection and clouds, extreme weather, and climate. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, and her work has been featured in news outlets like Science News, the BBC, and NPR, with a recent study showing the impacts of urbanization on storms highlighted by AGU and The Guardian. Fan was an AGU ASCENT awardee in 2015 and received her PhD in atmospheric sciences from Texas A&M in 2007, joining Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as an atmospheric researcher later that year.
