Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) materials scientist Arun Devaraj has joined the editorial board of npj Materials Degradation. Devaraj joined the board in November 2022.

npj Materials Degradation, part of the Nature portfolio journals, publishes “high-quality papers reporting significant advances in basic and applied research on the degradation of metallic and non-metallic materials.” Papers focus on how materials lose their ability to function based on environmental and other conditions. Articles include original computational and experimental studies, reviews, perspectives, and discussions from industry about materials in demanding environments.

As an editorial board member, Devaraj will act as a regular reviewer and provide advice on other matters as needed. Devaraj studies how processing and fundamental structures affect the properties of materials, with a focus on metals and metal alloys under extreme conditions.

npj Materials Degradation is one of the top journals in the materials degradation field,” said Devaraj. “I am excited to be a part of the editorial board of npj Materials Degradation, contributing to outstanding publications on atomic scale mechanisms of materials degradation under extreme environments relevant to advanced energy technologies."

Devaraj received his PhD in materials science and engineering from the University of North Texas and his BS in metallurgical engineering and material science from the Malaviya National Institute of Technology. He is currently Vice President of the International Field Emission Society. Devaraj received a 2020 Early Career Research Program award from the Department of Energy. Devaraj holds multiple editorial roles, including at PLOS One and guest editor roles in JOM: Journal of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, Microscopy and Microanalysis special issues, and key reader for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A.

A joint appointee with PNNL and the Colorado School of Mines, Devaraj focuses his research on clean energy-relevant materials. These include steel, lightweight alloys, energy storage materials, and catalyst materials.
