Lauren Charles, a senior data scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has joined the CABI One Health Editorial Board as an associate editor.

CABI is an international, inter-governmental, not-for-profit organization with 49 member countries that guide its work. CABI’s One Health Resources, an academic publisher in the life sciences, focuses on the connections between humans, animals, plants, ecosystems, and their shared environments. The editorial board oversees the scientific content, which is published through an open-access journal, case studies, books, and an online knowledge bank.

“I am honored to be selected and look forward to engaging in a truly inter- and trans-disciplinary dialogue with passionate experts from around the world,” said Charles. “The impact of this effort will directly promote One Health and foster a closer connection between science and society through academic, non-academic, practical, local, and indigenous knowledge from around the world.”

With more than 40 publications, Charles's research integrates heterogeneous data sources into complex mathematical models to advance current biosurveillance, event and anomaly detection, and threat assessments through a One Health approach.

At PNNL, she focuses on One Health and national security solutions in support of non-governmental and governmental organizations. Charles has a joint appointment with the Washington State University’s Paul Allen School for Global Health.

One Health is a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach—working at the local, regional, national, and global levels—with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes that recognize the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment.
