Amanda Howard will present at Rising Stars 2019, a workshop for women graduate students and postdocs who are interested in pursuing academic and research careers. This workshop—hosted by the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin and Sandia National Laboratories—will be the first-ever Rising Stars workshop in computational and data sciences.

Rising Stars workshops are small and intensive—Howard is one of only 32 nominees selected to attend this year’s event. Howard, a postdoctoral research assistant in the Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division, was nominated to attend by Lab Fellow Alex Tartakovsky. She is working with Tartakovsky on his “New Dimension Reduction Methods and Scalable Algorithms for Nonlinear Phenomena” project. Howard’s role in the project is to implement a non-local surface tension model for multiscale simulations.

At Rising Stars 2019, Howard will attend research presentations, poster sessions, networking events, and interactive discussions. She will also present her poster “Non-Local Model for Surface Tension in Multiphase Flows” and deliver a presentation on the same topic.

“I am most excited about connecting with other researchers who are at a similar stage of their careers,” said Howard. “It is really important to build connections for future collaborations, and this event is a great way to meet other women with a similar focus.”
