PNNL is a corporate advisory board member for the International Council on Systems Engineering.
The Systems Engineering and Integration Division applies a diverse set of science and engineering capabilities in the form of expert staff, laboratories, and unique test facilities for small- and large-scale programs. By using robust systems engineering approaches, our staff creates holistic solutions for clients based on their requirements, with a focus on accelerating the rate of innovation and domestic and global impact. Technical expertise, systems engineering, and project management excellence are leveraged to solve the nation's most challenging and complex problems.
PNNL's technical capabilities for systems engineering and integration are organized in the following five technical groups:
- Electronics and Measurement Systems develops integrated sensor systems to monitor, measure, and analyze physical, chemical, and environmental properties to provide actionable information to government and commercial clients. Technical contributions range from concept development to feasibility testing and evaluation, prototype development for lab and field evaluation, deployment of equipment to meet client application requirements, and commercialization of technologies.
- Engineered Systems applies sound systems engineering principles to deliver integrated, applied, science-based solutions that meet complex client needs. We play a major role in the development, production, and support phases of the system lifecycle. Staff plays a major role in the verification and validation of technologies, technology assessments, and qualification of systems, including testing of complex and sensitive systems in operational environments.
- Global Security Technology and Policy combines policy with science and technology to promote international and regional cooperation and sustainability, with a particular focus on promoting security by preventing terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Skills and experience include policy and regulatory analysis, human-centered analytics (human factors and computational analysis), technology assessment, social and behavioral sciences, risk management, and stakeholder engagement.
- The Nonproliferation Systems Integration technical group has an international reputation for providing world-class project management and technical expertise to international and domestic security, safeguards, and nonproliferation issues dealing with weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, radioactive, biological and chemical), illicit trafficking, treaty verification, border security, and policy analysis and implementation. Nonproliferation Systems Integration staff have experience working at more than 100 international sites, including managing "in country" relationships and establishing/executing subcontracts at each of those locations. Areas of specialty include technology development, testing and evaluation, technology deployment, sustainability, and successful transfer of equipment/capabilities to international governments.
- Nuclear Systems Design, Engineering and Analysis provides mechanical, material and nuclear engineering design and analysis that are used to solve a range of technical issues or develop new technologies associated with nuclear facilities, primarily nuclear reactors. Design and analysis talents are used to develop new technologies and address the safety of new or existing nuclear facilities. Engineering analysis consists of nuclear reactor safety analysis and core design, facility safety analysis, reactor thermal hydraulic analysis, criticality safety assessments, radiation shielding analysis, and nuclear fuels and materials performance analysis.
