The Radiation Detection & Nuclear Sciences (RDNS) group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) conducts a variety of fundamental and applied research projects leading to new capabilities in trace chemical and radionuclide detection, environmental assessment and remediation, treaty verification, and proliferation detection and prevention. Our instruments and facilities have found application in environments ranging from water wells and nuclear reactor cores to aircraft and spacecraft. Field sampling and measurement campaigns have involved urban characterization, border control, soil characterization, waste characterization, facility decontamination and decommissioning, aqueous measurements, and atmospheric measurements.

A particular strength of the RDNS group is our access to the entire set of capabilities and resources of PNNL including the Radiological Processing Laboratory, Applied Process Engineering Laboratory, and the Environmental and Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL). Our location near the Hanford Site permits convenient field work related to environmental characterization and nonproliferation detection research.
