Radiation Detection & Nuclear Sciences
The Radiation Detection & Nuclear Sciences (RDNS) group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) conducts a variety of fundamental and applied research projects leading to new capabilities in radionuclide detection, environmental assessment and remediation, treaty verification, detector materials development, realistic computer modeling, and proliferation detection and prevention.
Our instruments and facilities have found application in environments ranging from water wells and nuclear reactor cores to aircraft and spacecraft. Field sampling and measurement campaigns have involved urban characterization, border control, soil characterization, waste characterization, facility decontamination and decommissioning, aqueous measurements, and atmospheric measurements.
Our group's core capabilities, represented above, include basic science (nuclear and high-energy physics), radiation transport modeling and simulation, active interrogation and imaging, materials development for radiation detection, and ultra-low-background radiation detection. Our unique facilities include a shallow underground laboratory, cleanrooms, and the Radiation Detection Systems Integration Laboratory.
A particular strength of the RDNS group is our access to the entire suite of capabilities and resources of PNNL, including the Radiological Processing Laboratory, Applied Process Engineering Laboratory, and the Environmental and Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL). RDNS boasts a hand-in-glove working relationship with the other technical groups in the Chemical, Biological and Physical Sciences Division, especially Detector Systems and Radiological Analysis—our nearest neighbors in the Physical Sciences Facility. Our location near the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site permits convenient field work related to environmental characterization and nonproliferation detection research.
