Sustainable Nuclear Power Initiative

The Sustainable Nuclear Power Initiative aims to develop the scientific understanding, strategies and key technologies associated with accelerated nuclear fuel qualification, transuranic recycling and proliferation-resistant technologies that will enable the development and implementation of sustainable, proliferation-resistant nuclear power generation in the United States and worldwide. Expected impacts include:
- Development of new methods for fuel qualification and recycling of transuranics coupled with safeguards and verification approaches and technologies that greatly increase proliferation resistance
- Establishment of PNNL as a leader in emerging nuclear science and power programs with DOE-NE, DOE-SC and NNSA
- Strengthening of PNNL's radiological science and technology capabilities and ensuring that they remain relevant to global changes.
