Emergency Operations
In support of the Office of Emergency Response, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) provides response and consequence management support, as well as research and technologies for radiological or nuclear incidents.
We provide emergency response technology development and training nationally and internationally. We manage radiological and nuclear response exercises in coordination with law enforcement agencies. We collaborate with the Remote Sensing Laboratory on software to support NNSA’s Aerial Measurement System and provide support to the DOE Region 8 Radiological Assistance Program. Our scientists conduct radiological and nuclear analysis and characterization on suspect materials for clues about the place of origin and process history.
For this work, PNNL draws on its expertise in nuclear materials detection and measurement, nuclear chemistry, software systems engineering, and plutonium production historical knowledge.
