Success Stories

PNNL provides hands-on opportunities for talented, driven youth to go behind the scenes of technology innovation. These next-generation scientists study ways to prevent terrorist attacks within the U.S., reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recovery efforts from attacks. Since the program's inception, PNNL has hosted 31 DHS Scholars and Fellows, providing project funding and technical mentors.

Mitchell MyjackMitch Myjack, PNNL Engineer

"As a DHS student intern, I received my first exposure to the groundbreaking research and development work being conducted at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The one thing that struck me the most was how, even as an intern, I could make a significant contribution to projects that would protect the nation, improve the quality of the environment, and benefit our society. After accepting their employment offer after graduation, I am now developing reconfigurable electronics platforms for a variety of radiation detector systems. I have been the project manager or principal investigator for a number of significant research efforts, and have had a patent application filed for a particular radiation imaging technique that I developed. For an electrical engineer fresh out of academia, the opportunity to interact with multidisciplinary teams and take an idea from a sketch to a working system has been more challenging and rewarding than I ever imagined."

Tony Cinson, PNNL Scientist

"The internship I completed at PNNL served perfectly as a bridge from academia to my professional career as a scientist employed by a national laboratory. Throughout the internship I was able to make key network connections with staff at PNNL that, along with actual work experience gained from the internship itself, ultimately blossomed into a permanent employment opportunity! I count myself very fortunate to have such a successful career path beginning with that initial internship over three years ago."
