The DHS S&T Human Factors Division applies the social and behavioral sciences to improve detection, analysis and understanding and response to homeland security threats. PNNL's expertise includes:
- Human factors predictive technosocial modeling
- Bayesian network modeling (social networks)
- Knowledge representation and reasoning
- Cognitive enhancement.
Specifically, PNNL is developing a software framework to assist analysts in assessing the likelihood of groups to engage in violent behavior. The Violent Intent Modeling (VIM) system provides an analytical framework that:
- Leverages the expertise of social scientists to model ideological, organizational and contextual factors associated with violent intent
- Uses structured and unstructured data from open source and classified repositories
- Uses knowledge representation and dissemination methods to encapsulate the expert knowledge and evidence gathered and make it accessible to analysts
- Combines evidentiary reasoning, social simulations and sensitivity analysis to assess violent intent hypotheses.
