PNNL's expertise in support of this mission includes:
- Radiation detection as applied to detecting threats in challenging operational environments
- Systems engineering
- Test and evaluation
- Deployment of interdiction systems
- Operational analysis and support
- Nuclear forensics
- Radiation detection system modeling and analysis
- Data acquisition and data analysis
- Radiation detection materials discovery.
Radiation Portal Monitor Project
PNNL is working with the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to deploy radiation portal monitors (RPMs) at land and rail crossings, seaport and international airport terminals, and international mail and express courier facilities across the country. RPMs are part of a multi-layered interdiction system that includes radiation detectors, other inspection technologies such as radiography, information technology infrastructure, physical searches and, most importantly, the highly trained CBP officers.
