PNNL researcher publishes book on solid oxide fuel cells

Subhash Singhal, a Battelle Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, co-edited the first book devoted solely to solid oxide fuel cells published in more than eight years.

The book, “High Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Fundamentals, Design and Applications,” provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on the operating principle, materials, cell and stack designs and fabrication processes, cell and stack performance, and applications of SOFCs. It was released in December by Elsevier and co-edited by Kevin Kendall of the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

“There are a lot of other publications out there about fuel cells,” said Singhal, “but this is the only one currently in print about solid oxide fuels.” In 1995, Elsevier published the only other book written specifically about solid oxide fuel cells, which is no longer in print.

According to the Elsevier Web site, “The growing interest in fuel cells as a sustainable source of energy is pulling with it the need for new books which provide comprehensive and practical information on specific types of fuel cells and their application. This landmark volume on solid oxide fuel cells contains contributions from experts of international repute, and provides a single source of the latest knowledge on this topic.”

The book includes individual chapters written by internationally renowned authors in their respective fields. It is intended for use by researchers, engineers, and other people working in the technical field of SOFCs.
