Biography

Scientists at PNNL are working on next-generation nuclear reactor technologies that could help meet the demand for zero-emissions electricity as power systems transition away from fossil fuels. PNNL's Ali Zbib leads the techno-economic analysis and strategic partnerships that will be needed to bring nuclear energy concepts from the Lab to commercial scale.

“Decarbonizing the electric grid is essential in combating climate change,” Zbib said. Nuclear power could complement the deployment of wind, solar power, and other non-emitting resources to support transitioning to a clean and stable grid.

Zbib led the development of the 2021 PNNL report, Techno-economic Assessment for GenerationIII+ Small Modular Reactor Deployments in the Pacific Northwest, that examined the prospects for small modular reactors, flexible generators that have not yet been deployed in the United States. The analysis found that such reactors could help fill an electricity gap in Washington State as carbon-emitting resources like coal and natural gas are phased out.

“Nuclear energy is a reliable source of flexible generation,” Zbib said. “Our findings show that advanced small modular reactors could be economically competitive in a future carbon-free electricity sector. They’re well-suited to play an important role in an energy market that requires more flexibility.”

Before joining PNNL in 2018, Zbib held several leadership positions at Framatome and Energy Northwest. He also was a member of Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)-sponsored industry committees that addressed challenges with nuclear fuel performance and developed accident tolerant fuel.
