Providing Breakthrough Energy and Materials for a Better World
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Energy Science & Technology Directorate creates scientific understanding and technology solutions for public and private sectors resulting in:
- Secure, clean, and affordable energy systems in a carbon-constrained world
- Innovative materials and applications
Scientific Understanding and Technical Breakthroughs
The Energy Science and Technology Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory supports the Department of Energy's mission by looking for solutions that allow the nation to use existing energy resources in the most efficient and environmentally acceptable manner possible. We are exploring the energy system of the future, and how to bridge the gap to advanced energy systems including fuel cells and a fully integrated hydrogen economy. We study the extrinsic properties of complex materials and relate them to atomistic, chemical, and structural properties to provide the foundation for innovative energy technologies.
With a broad collection of capabilities and expertise, our work focuses on energy and engineering, materials science and technology. Because PNNL often establishes multidisciplinary teams to address the needs of government and industry customers, we collaborate across the Laboratory to deliver innovative solutions based upon fundamental physical, chemical and biological science capabilities.
Our research areas range from catalyst development to buildng technologies, from fuel cells to robotics, from power grid technologies, to carbon management—and many areas in between.
PNNL's energy research supports a number of clients within the Department of Energy, contributing to DOE's mission to deliver secure, reliable and affordable energy. These include:
- Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
- Office of Fossil Energy
- Office of Electric Transmission and Distribution
- Office of Science
- Office of Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology
- Climate Change Technology Program
In addition, our customers include the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense as well as other government agencies and industry. Battelle's unique contract with DOE consolidates government and private equipment and allows Laboratory staff to conduct government and private research.
