Experience:

Joe Roop has been with PNNL since 1981. Dr. Roop's professional career includes a broad range of experience in the analysis and modeling of energy and policy systems, both domestic and international. He is currently engaged in three projects: he leads a team building and maintaining a system of indicators to track energy-intensity improvements in the U.S. economy. Initiated under President Bush's Energy Strategy, this system of indicators was publicly released last year. He also leads the industrial modeling project for EERE's SEDS (Stochastic Energy Deployment System). FY07 should also see the completion of an analysis tool, SEADS (Sectoral Energy/Employment Analysis and Data System).

He served as chief economist for the Energy Systems Transformation Initiative, integrating economics into the electricity distribution system to explore the responsiveness of electricity use to real-time changes in prices. This lab initiative has evolved into a major DOE program called GridWise™, which is an entirely new way to think about how we generate, deliver, and use energy through advanced communications and information technology.

In addition, he manages analysis work for the Industrial Technologies Program and has a program with the Analysis Group of EERE's Office of Planning, Analysis and Evaluation. He is currently calibrating the industrial sector of an energy demand model to U.S. Data that will be run in conjunction with a similar Canadian model to explore joint impacts of climate change policies.
