Technology Systems Analysis Group
David (Dave) W. Winiarski
Technical Expertise
- Experienced user of large scale building simulation programs (BLAST and DOE2.1), as well as statistical energy modeling methods including PRISM analysis.
- Experienced with developing models of residential shell loads based on first principles and calibrating models with measured data. In addition, experienced in performing energy audits of commercial buildings and industrial processes.
- Primary project activities at PNNL have included:
- Monitoring, modeling, and verification of end-use energy consumption in mobile office buildings on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington State.
- Analysis of whole building pre- and post-retrofit energy use for residential apartment buildings in Warsaw, Poland
- Data analysis and energy audits in support of O&M activities at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia
- Instrumentation, data collection and data analysis activities to assess apartment building shell loads in Zhukovskij, Russia
- Principal investigator of the Seahorse residential gas hot water heater retrofit at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Project involved demonstration of a gas hot water retrofit for existing electric hot water tanks, characterization of system performance and economic potential for this technology in the Federal sector.
- Developer of computerized database of building commissioning literature for DOE
- Served as a principal provider of technical analysis contributing to the development of ASHRAE 90.1-1999 requirements for commercial cooling equipment, boilers, furnaces, hot water heaters, economizer usage, and HVAC duct insulation. Provided technical support for individual state energy standards activities dealing with building mechanical systems.
- One of three principal technical contributors to development of Fedcom II; a next-generation federal commercial building code
- Technical contributor to DOE's residential water heater analysis for year 2000 NAECA rulemaking activities
- A primary technical contributor to DOE's commercial building equipment program
Experience
Mr. Winiarski is a senior research engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory with experience in experimental design, set-up, and operation of end-use energy metering and monitoring projects and subsequent performance analysis of large and small commercial HVAC systems and residential hot water systems.
