Environmental Management System
Welcome to PNNL's Environmental Management System website. The purpose of the Environmental Management System is to achieve and demonstrate environmental excellence by assessing and controlling the impact of Laboratory activities, research and development (R&D) projects, and facilities on the environment, public, and employee health and safety.
At PNNL we are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all staff; protecting the general public and the environment from unacceptable environmental, safety and health risks; and operating in a manner that protects and restores the environment. See PNNL's Environmental Stewardship Policy.
Pacific Northwest Division (PNWD) uses the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001) Environmental Management System (EMS) as a tool to manage, control, and measure environmental impacts. Potential environmental impacts (aspects) from laboratory operations are identified and controlled using several methods. The ISO 14001 EMS is designed to help improve environmental performance, provide for compliance with the law, improve efficiency and effectiveness, reduce costs, and earn and retain regulator and community trust.
The Battelle PNWD EMS was first registered to the ISO 14001:1996 Standard in November 2002 and received registration to ISO 14001:2004 in December 2005. This registration was renewed in November 2008.

Resource Conservation and Pollution Prevention
Water Conservation and Energy Efficiency—As the national and regional energy costs are rising significantly in the Pacific Northwest region, power shortages because of low water conditions might be possible. That is why PNNL has made water conservation and energy efficiency the key elements of its Facility Energy Management Plan.
Pollution Prevention (P2)—PNNL's Pollution Prevention (P2) Program is dedicated to helping staff prevent or minimize all pollutants (non-hazardous, hazardous, radioactive, etc.) to all media (air emissions, liquid effluents, and solid waste). The P2 Program looks for opportunities for resource conservation, recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation, and purchasing environmentally preferable products and services. The P2 Program at PNNL provides a wide range of pollution prevention services from operating the office waste recycling program to providing technical assistance to laboratory researchers. The scope of the program also includes the compliance aspects of pollution prevention such as reporting progress to the regulating agencies. Contact ^Pollution Prevention for assistance.
