Power Grid Attacks: How Prepared Are We?

PNNL was one of 200 organizations nationwide participating in a drill to practice responding to a hypothetical cyber attack on the nation's power grid. The two-day November drill, called GridEx II, was the largest of its kind in the nation to date. Participating organizations practiced responding to various scenarios such as "adversaries" injecting computer viruses into grid control systems, bombing transformers and substations, and disabling power lines. The drill was organized by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which operates under the Federal Regulatory Commission.  Results were used to assess how prepared the nation is to respond to a cyber attack on the grid.
