Mammal Groups
The species list for mammals is based on a combination of observations and monitoring surveys by PNNL (Fitzner and Gray 1991; 2005 Hanford Site Annual Report) and The Nature Conservancy (1998). While some populations have been monitored extensively over the years (e.g., elk, coyotes, small mammals), the presence of other species such as porcupines, beavers, badgers, etc., is based primarily on incidental sightings. The pygmy rabbit is not included on the list; surveys in the 1990’s by PNNL and The Nature Conservancy failed to find them on the Site.
