The Pollution Prevention Good Practice Guide

The U.S. Department of Energy Good Practice Guide on Pollution Prevention (GPG-FM-025A) is an updated version of the Proposed Framework for Conducting Pollution Prevention Design Assessments on U.S. Department of Energy Design Projects (P2DA Guidebook).

The Pollution Prevention Good Practice Guide takes the reader through the five steps of the P2DA process. This guidebook integrates the traditional Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessment (PPOA) method with the DOE design process and other information on nationwide activities in the field of sustainable design. Although this methodology is based on the DOE method for conducting PPOAs, the P2DA process starts in earlier stages of design, before the product or facility exists.

In addition to the P2DA framework, the Good Practice Guide examines the institutional barriers toward implementation of sustainable design and offers specific suggestions for overcoming these barriers and promoting pollution prevention during the design of products, processes, and facilities.

The guidebook is available to the public and can be downloaded from the Department of Energy Good Practice Guide homepage. Hardcopies are available on request by contacting Keith Peterson or Kim Fowler.
