Project Description: A community-based user facility, APEL provides laboratory and office space for companies that are developing, testing, and spinning off new products and businesses. To create APEL, an existing 90,000-sq-ft facility was used; this ensured that no acerage was disturbed during the modification. The cost of the design and construction project is budgeted to be a total of $3.5 million. The sustainable design efforts began with participation on the project during the preliminary design phase.

Some of the sustainable design features of APEL are including energy and material conservation in facility and laboratory design, source reduction through innovative chemical analysis and waste characterization equipment, reduction of hazardous waste through product substitution and segregation, and recycling of sanitary wastes.

Key Sustainable Design Features of Project:

  • Energy and material conservation in facility and laboratory design
  • Source reduction through innovative chemical analysis and waste characterization equipment
  • Reduction of hazardous waste through product substitution and segregation
  • Recycling of sanitary wastes.
