- Classic Definition:
"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Brundtland Commission - Modified Definition:
"The systems approach to design and construction for facilities, systems, and equipment that insures consideration of the optimization of ecological and human issues in light of well-grounded acceptable economic constraints." - HOK Definition:
"A balance that accommodates human needs without diminishing the health and productivity of natural systems." - AIA Definition:
"The ability of society to continue functioning into the future without being forced into decline through exhaustion or overloading of the key resource on which that system depends."
