Performance Goals

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's overall facility energy management goal is to identify and implement energy conservation measures that match the Laboratory's strategy to establish a sustainable environment for conducting research and development. The Laboratory's performance goals and measures for FY 2006 include several significant energy management activities listed below:

  1. Acquire at least 6% environmentally preferred power for the laboratory.
  2. Reduce natural gas consumption at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) by 20% compared to FY 2005.
  3. Use biodiesel for boilers and generators as a case study for operations at EMSL.
  4. Complete projects co-funded by Bonneville Power Administration involving energy upgrades to facilities in the 300 Area.
  5. Complete Phase III of the energy savings performance improvements in Battelle owned facilities.
  6. Develop and implement water efficiency program and plan.

Other recent major accomplishments:

  • Overall for the buildings category, energy use reduced 43 percent from the FY 1985 baseline. For industrial and laboratory facilities, a 46 percent reduction from the FY 1990 baseline has been achieved.
  • Three PNNL buildings qualified for Energy Star label.
  • Installed six solar-powered parking lot lights.

Total water purchases for PNNL facilities were reduced six percent from the FY 2000 baseline. This has been achieved by installing, for example, closed loop process cooling systems, installation of water-less urinals, and use of advanced landscaping methods.
