Biography

Dr. Mohammad (Moe) Khaleel is Director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Computational Sciences and Mathematics (CSM) Division and a PNNL Fellow. The CSM Division provides scientific and technological solutions through the integration of high-performance computing, data-intensive computing, computational sciences, mathematics, scalable data management, and bioinformatics to advance the Laboratory's mission areas.

Khaleel is an international leader in multiphysics and multiscale modeling of solid oxide fuel cells and lightweight materials. Khaleel's current research interests are tuned to world energy systems and the future role for fuel cell systems. He is focused on the development of computational methods and tools for simulating advanced forming and joining technologies, multiphysics modeling of solid oxide fuel cells, basic material modeling, and probabilistic mechanics. He also serves as the national coordinator for modeling activities associated with solid oxide fuel cells for the Solid Energy Conversion Alliance - SECA - program.

Besides leading the CSM Division, Khaleel has held numerous engineering leadership roles, including managing PNNL's hydrogen and transportation programs and the advanced manufacturing product line. Khaleel received a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to computational engineering and fuel cell technologies at the 2007 International Joint Conference on Knowledge Management for Composite Materials, Nanosciences, and Fuel Cells. Other notable awards include the award for Excellence in Technology Transfer of superplastic forming of aluminum to General Motor Company, Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer, May 10, 2000; the ASME International, McGrattan Literature Award for authoring the outstanding paper in the Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology in 1998, "Effects of Flaw Sizing on Reliability of Piping;" Battelle Memorial Institute Technical Network Leader of the Year (2001); Suksdorf Fellowship at Washington State University (WSU), 1990-1992.

Since 1993, Khaleel has been an Adjunct Faculty at Washington State University's School of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. He also is Co-Advisor/Member-Ph.D. Dissertation at the Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France; University of Metz, Metz, France; and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
