For the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory leads research projects to expand the scientific foundations for new and improved energy technologies and for understanding and mitigating the environmental impacts of energy use. In addition, PNNL supports BES in creating knowledge and developing tools to strengthen national security.

Research for BES contributes to PNNL's work in developing tools and the understanding required to control chemical and physical processes in complex multiphase environments.
