Our Licensing Philosophy

Gordon Battelle

For more than four decades Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has developed and managed a growing portfolio of intellectual property. Battelle Memorial Institute, which manages the Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy, has a long-standing history of moving new science into commercial products. In fact, federal legislation and Battelle's contract with the DOE make this "technology transfer" a mission of the laboratory.

Battelle, which began operations in 1929, was established in Columbus, Ohio, by Gordon Battelle and serves as a memorial to his family—leaders in America's early steel industry. At the core of the memorial's foundation was a goal to improve U.S. industrial competitiveness through science and technology. This objective is central to PNNL's operations today.

We believe that intellectual assets are our product. Our job is scientific discovery; our business is innovation and commercial application. Our business model is to seek out future returns through commercialization and licensing of our technologies for reinvestment into next generation science and technology. And we are doing it. Well.
