What's an SFA?

PNNL's Foundational Sciences Scientific Focus Area (FSFA) is one of several Scientific Focus Areas (SFAs) for National Laboratory research funded by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) within the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Science.

The PNNL FSFA is part of the Genomic Science Program under BER's Biological Systems Science Division (BSSD).

The SFAs were created in 2008 to take advantage of the multidisciplinary, team-oriented research that is a strength of a national laboratory such as PNNL. The SFA structure makes it easier to communicate a holistic view of science within BER. It enables DOE to identify areas for future solicitations.
