Focus Areas
The iRESM team is simultaneously working on three main focus areas, which are integrated with strong interactions and feedbacks as shown in the diagram:
- Focus Area 1: Model Development
- Focus Area 2: Experimentation, Evaluation, and Demonstration
- Focus Area 3: Decision Making, Uncertainty Assessment and Analysis
Focus Area 1 will involve the conceptualization and construction of the overall iRESM model architecture and designing and implementing new models and interfaces so that integration of human and environmental systems is achieved.
Focus Area 2 will develop a set of numerical experiments to evaluate the individual models and the framework developed in Focus Area 1. It also will execute the uncertainty characterization process developed in Focus Area 3, and it will perform other demonstrations of the capability as needed for each pilot study. Insights from the numerical experiments will inform the model development activities in Focus Area 1 as well as the stakeholder interactions in Focus Area 3.
Focus Area 3 will include structured interactions with multiple scientific and regional planning communities (stakeholders) to understand research and decision support needs in each pilot region. Focus Area 3 will validate the initial expectations for the models, set reasonable expectations for model performance, and develop the decision framing/uncertainty characterization process.
