The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE EM) is responsible for risk reduction and remediation of some of the most complex and formidable subsurface environmental restoration challenges in the world (134 distinct geographic sites in 31 states and a U.S. territory).
An Integrated Path Forward
DOE EM has made considerable progress in remediating groundwater and soil contamination, but significant challenges remain. Strategic leveraging of resources, generated by various agencies and scientific disciplines, brings together the technical expertise and creativity necessary for success.
Integration is critical to EM applied research efforts to reduce the technical uncertainty and risk associated with site closure. The Office of Technology Innovation and Development strategically transforms basic science (Office of Science) through applied research (EM subsurface science) into remedial strategies and techniques for efficient remediation.
