What is AISU?The Advanced International Studies Unit (AISU) is an international energy and environmental problem solver. Its staff is small, but its reach extends throughout the world, thanks to close ties with an international network of energy analysts and project managers.AISU is part of Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change in the Fundamental Science Division of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, operated by Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy. Battelle was created in 1925 as a not-for-profit corporation to conduct scientific research for the advancement of humankind.
Why Does AISU Exist?AISU grew out of the recognition that countries making the transition from planning systems to market economies emit significant quantities of greenhouse gases, yet their standards of living are quite low. The transition countries are rich in scientific knowledge but poor in advanced technology. These paradoxes created an excellent opportunity to establish a unit within the laboratory that would collaborate with energy experts from transition countries on global climate change policy research. These research efforts evolved into collaborative programs to transfer technologies and practices that improve energy efficiency and protect the environment.AISU has three sets of goals.
Who Pays for This?AISU receives support from a range of government agencies, foundations, and private companies, including the following:U.S. Environmental Protection Agency U.S. Agency for International Development Pew Center on Global Climate Change United Nations Development Programme
Where is AISU?AISU is located in the Washington, D.C. office of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Acting Director Gerald M. Stokes can be reached through his assistant Paulette Wright at the address below.
