Director's Message

Michael Kluse, Laboratory Director
Welcome to the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where we’re advancing the frontiers of fundamental science and solving America’s most intractable problems in energy, national security, and the environment.
PNNL’s research touches many facets of American life:
- We're gaining new insights into climate change through atmospheric research and experiments focused on capturing carbon dioxide and storing it deep underground.
- Through our expertise in protein science, we’re working on methods to quickly detect aggressive forms of cancer.
- Our holographic imaging technology is improving the safety of air travel by identifying hidden weapons—before they reach the plane.
- We're demonstrating that sensor technologies can help consumers save money on their power bills and make the nation’s electric grid more reliable.
- We’re at the forefront of biomass research, exploring ways to convert materials we often throw away—such as agricultural waste—into valuable fuels and chemicals.
Our world-leading science and technology begins with interdisciplinary expertise—or our unique ability to assemble teams of experts from multiple scientific disciplines. We also believe in the value of collaborative research, often working in partnership with other national laboratories, industry, and colleges and universities.
While our work is important to the nation and world, we also consider ourselves a committed partner at the local and regional level. For more than four decades, we have been teaming with the community and state to strengthen the economy and educate the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Whether you’re a customer, a collaborator, our neighbor, or just a curious visitor—welcome to our website. I hope you’ll take some time to look around and see the many ways PNNL is making a difference in the nation and world.
