50 Years of Discovery in Action

For more than 50 years, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has put discovery in action, reshaping the way we work and live. PNNL's scientific discoveries and innovations have led to more fuel efficient cars and an electric power grid that is more reliable and efficient. They have made airports, borders and workplaces safer. And they have created better ways to address environmental challenges and protect natural resources. Today, we continue to address big challenges like our nation's energy capacity, helping to curb our dependence on imported fuel, and protecting the nation from acts of violence.

Our Mission, Vision and Values

Over the years, our mission at PNNL has expanded to meet national priorities working to transform the world through courageous discovery and innovation. Every day as we focus on solving complex national problems, keeping our vision in mind: that our science and technology inspire and enable the world to live prosperously, safely, and securely. The mission and vision at PNNL are supported by a culture built on these core values: integrity, creativity, collaboration, impact and courage.

We're located in Richland, Wash., and are one among ten U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories managed by DOE's Office of Science. Our research strengthens the U.S. foundation for innovation. And we help find solutions for not only DOE, but for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, other government agencies, universities and industry.

Unlike others, PNNL's multidisciplinary scientific teams are brought together to address their problems focusing on four areas: science, energy, the earth and national security.

Science: We provide the facilities, unique scientific equipment, and world-renowned scientists and engineers to strengthen U.S. scientific foundations through fundamental research and innovation.

Energy: We increase U.S. energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported oil through research of hydrogen and biomass-based fuels.

The Earth: We reduce the effects of energy generation and use on the environment.

National Security: We prevent and counter acts of terrorism through applied research in information analysis, cyber security, and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

PNNL at a Glance

Today, more than 4,300 are employed at PNNL; our FY14 business volume was $1.02 billion. Our Richland campus includes unique laboratories and specialized equipment as well as the William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE Office of Science national scientific user facility. In addition to the Richland campus, we operate a marine research facility in Sequim, Washington; and satellite offices in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, D.C.

Battelle—headquartered in Columbus, Ohio—has managed and operated PNNL for DOE and its predecessors since the Laboratory's inception in 1965.
