Marty Conger serves as Chief Finance Office and Associate Laboratory Director for Business Systems at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He is responsible not only for all financial systems and practices, he also maintains oversight of the Laboratory's contracts/acquisitions and information management/technology functions. Through his oversight, he leads 500 staff—of the Laboratory's nearly 5,000—in successfully developing and stewarding all of PNNL's business systems and practices that enable scientists to focus on and conduct critical research and development activities in support of DOE and the nation.

Since assuming the CFO role in 2006, Marty has helped PNNL achieve 45% growth in business revenues to $1.1 billion and spearheaded development of a successful financing plan for two private facilities as well as execution of an affordability plan for seven new state-of-the-art facilities—all valued at more than $300 million.

Marty developed and organized the National Laboratory CFO Working Group, sanctioned by the national laboratory directors and created to help DOE solve major financial and business challenges. Marty is the first and current Chair of this group. Once recent effort undertaken by this group was to gain an understanding of the costs of benefits and pensions across the entire DOE complex, and with the resulting findings, Marty led development and implementation of a DOE-wide plan of action to reverse the escalating trend of benefit and pension costs.

Marty's leadership skills resulted in him being tapped to serve on the Executive Committee of the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce. Marty also serves on the Chamber's Board and as a second-term board member of the United Way of Benton and Franklin counties. In addition, he is past Chair of the Columbia Basin Dive Rescue, a non-profit, all-volunteer agency that provides water rescue and recovery services to local law enforcement, fire, and other emergency services throughout a five-county area. He served on the transportation subcommittee of the Tri-Cities Economic Development Council, where he was active in recruiting additional major airline service to the Tri-Cities Regional Airport. He has also leveraged his financial expertise through teaching first-year accounting at Columbia Basin College.

In 2011, Marty was named CFO of the Year by the Puget Sound Business Journal in the category of Large Nonprofit Organization—making him the first CFO from eastern Washington to receive the state-wide honor.

He joined PNNL in 1976. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Puget Sounds in Tacoma in 1976.
