The Evolution of Tomorrow's Science Starts Here
Biofuels: Consequences for Carbon, Landscapes,
and Sustainability
As technology pioneers in the development of bio-based products and next-generation biofuels, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is addressing the need for renewable sources of energy. We are also recognizing the potential impact the burgeoning biofuels industry may have on ecosystems. At this year's AAAS, a multidisciplinary panel of ecologists, biogeochemists, and integrated assessment modelers will explain how the race to produce biofuels may drive up food, forestry, and land prices, potentially putting our environment in debt.
PNNL is leading innovative research and development to address the complex challenges facing our nation and world. Stop by our exhibit at AAAS 2009 to learn more about our highly talented people, unique facilities and cutting-edge science.

Driving Beyond Our Nano-Headlights?
Manufacturers are eagerly embracing nanotechnology that promises to make their products cleaner, greener, shinier, and better. Nanotechnology is expected to capture 80% of the medical and pharmaceutical market by 2015, leading to exciting breakthroughs in the early detection of disease and enabling the targeted delivery of medications. These mighty, miniscule nanoparticles are capable of enormous achievements, but how will they impact human health and the environment?
PNNL seeks to answer "What if?" before the question is even asked. At AAAS 2009, we're bringing together a team of experts who are similarly committed to investigating how nanomaterials influence the body as a whole. They will impart the latest scientific discoveries into the biocompatibility of nanomaterials and their long-term effects on human health and the environment.
